Right up till the time it was confirmed that Scotland giants Rangers FC were being relegated to the fourth tier of the Scottish League, it seemed both surreal and unreal.

It is just like hearing Real Madrid and relegation in the same sentence much less a fourth tier type. But hypothetically speaking, in the event of such happening, the first point of thought of every football fan will be how Barcelona were going to dominate the rest of La Liga till Los Blancos.

And that is where we have Celtic. The Glaswegians, who together with The Gers make up what is fondly referred to as the Old Firm, prior to Rangers’ demotion, were 12 Scottish Premiership titles behind Rangers.

In the 6 years Rangers have been busy picking themselves up from liquidation and the lower tiers, Celtic in addition to the league title won on the season The Gers got the boot, racked up a straight 4 league titles in their rivals’ absence and made a statement of the gap between the two teams are by clinching the title in the Rangers’ first season back in the top flight with a whooping 106 points. Rangers managed a paltry 67 and a third place finish with Aberdeen in between.

Still with CoachCaixinha in charge and his commitment to return the wounded great club to familiar terrains, releasing deadwoods like Philippe Senderos from the club, it sure looks like a matter of time before the Scottish League reverses from the joke it currently is to one good enough to be called a competition even if it will be between just two teams.

Whether Rangers’ complete resurrection from the lower alleys of the Scottish professional football league will culminate in continuation of the Old Firm remains to be seen given these past few seasons though. But if you were Celtic, you’d just focus on closing the gap with as many trophies as possible.
